The National Blood Service; Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Shirley Owusu -Ofori, has officially launched the ‘Twellium-Zipline’ collaborative nationwide blood donation campaign under the theme, ‘’To share Love, Donate Blood’’ on Thursday,11 September 2025 in Accra.
The CEO revealed that, currently about six (6) out of every 1000 Ghanaians give blood instead of the expected 10 per 1000; hence patients do not have blood readily available and may therefore wait for prolonged periods to receive blood transfusions.
She took the occasion and entreated healthy individuals between the ages of 17 and 60; who have no previous donation experience to step forward and give their arms out for a blood donation draw and also reminded those who had donated awhile ago to take the opportunity to renew their commitment to save lives
Dr. Shirley Owusu-Ofori commended Twellium; a food and beverage company and Zipline; a drone delivery and health logistics organisation; for the blood mobilization initiative. This she said, would enhance blood donation experiences with donor satisfaction and also improve availability of blood and blood products at hospital blood banks to reduce the stress family and friends go through to secure blood for their patients. ‘Donors across the length and breadth of Ghana will be nutritiously refreshed and this will ripple into improved blood collection outcomes. Hence increasing availability and access to blood and blood products for transfusion therapy’’, she clarified.
“The drive would also contribute to the national efforts aimed at establishing a national blood supply system that is safe and based on 100% voluntary unpaid blood donation’’, she remarked.
A speech delivered on behalf of the General Manager for Twellium, Mr. Mohammed Kawtharani, disclosed that, hospitals across the country continue to face critical shortages of blood for various scenarios such as; mothers in need during childbirth, a child fighting critical illness or a road traffic accident victim.
Thus a year-long campaign to support re-stocking blood banks with over 10,000 units of voluntary blood donations to save lives, keep families together, restore hope and opportunities will definitely make a difference.
The statement mentioned that the blood donation campaign had been initiated earlier in Tamale and Kumasi with over 150 donors registering.
The General Manager was pleased to partner with Zipline, a global leader in instant drone delivery of health logistics who has transformed access to blood and medical supplies across Ghana.
