The National Blood Service, on June 14, successfully commemorated the 2023 Would Blood Donor Day in Accra, with various activities.
The month-long event started with a Cake-Cutting Ceremony to honour blood donors and various stakeholders for their long-standing contributions towards improved blood services related programmes in Ghana.
The Cake-Cutting Ceremony was also to afford blood recipients the opportunity to share their stories as beneficiaries to the rest of the world, with the aim of encouraging the general public to donate more blood on a regular basis to save lives.
The 2023 World Blood Donor Day was under the theme: Give Blood, Give Plasma, Share Life, Share Often.
With sponsorship support from World Health Organisation (WHO) Country office in Ghana, the National Blood Service successfully increased media visibility for the 2023 World Blood Donor events, through newspaper publication, radio and television appearances and interviews, to acknowledge blood donors and civil society for the contributing to the success of the Service’s work.
There was also a health walk, attended by organized groups, students, management, and staff of the National Blood Service. The walk was aimed at drawing the attention of government to the need to pay close attention to blood supply programme in Ghana and the need to encourage citizens to donate blood regularly.
The event was climaxed with a commemorative event at Alisa Hotel in Accra. The well attended commemorative event brought together various stakeholders including government officials.
The CEO of the National Blood Service, Dr. Shirley Owusu Ofori in a welcome address, thanked Ghanaians for supporting the Service by their regular donations and investments for the growth of the service. She assured the public of her continues engagement and interactions with all interested parties in ensuring effective and efficient health service delivery to Ghanaians.
The 2023 World Blood Donor Day was sponsored by WHO Ghana Country Office, Rhoche Pharmaceuticals Ltd and supported by the Ministry of Health.
