Give Blood, Give Hope: Together We Save Lives -Celebrating National Blood Donor Day 2025.

November 21, 2025

As we commemorate National Blood Donor Day 2025, the National Blood Service, Ghana, is shining a spotlight on the selfless individuals who donate blood voluntarily to support blood transfusion therapy.

With the theme “Give blood, give hope: together we save lives,” this year’s celebration underscores the life-changing impact of blood donation on those in need.

The Power of Blood Donation

Blood donation is a simple yet powerful act that can save lives.

According to the World Health Organization(WHO), every year, millions of people around the world require blood transfusions due to various medical conditions, accidents, or surgeries.

In Ghana, the demand for blood is high, with the Greater Accra Regional Blood Centre alone requiring a minimum of 800-1000 units daily.

The Challenges of Blood Supply

Despite the importance of blood donation, Ghana still faces challenges in maintaining a sustainable blood supply.

More than 50 per cent of blood supplies are based on family replacement donation, where donors give blood only when a relative or friend needs it.

This approach can lead to shortages and puts patients’ lives at risk.

The Impact of Voluntary Blood Donation

Voluntary, unpaid blood donation is the foundation of a safe and adequate blood supply. When individuals donate blood regularly, it helps to ensure that patients have access to timely and safe blood transfusions.

In Ghana, the National Blood Service is working to promote voluntary blood donation and encourage more people to become regular donors.

Celebrating National Blood Donor Day

To celebrate National Blood Donor Day, the National Blood Service has planned a series of activities, including a virtual public sensitization campaign, blood donation events, and an inter-SHS quiz competition.

The highlight of the celebration will be a commemorative event on November 24, 2025, where deserving individuals and institutions will be recognized for their contributions to blood donation.

Why Give Blood?

Giving blood is a simple act that can save lives. By donating blood, individuals can help patients who require transfusions due to medical conditions, accidents, or surgeries.

The benefits of blood donation include:

– Saving lives

– Improving health outcomes

– Providing a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment

– Getting a mini health check-up

Who Can Donate Blood?

To qualify to donate blood, an individual must:

– Be between 17 and 60 years old

– Weigh at least 50 kg

– Be in good health

– Not have any symptoms of fever, cold, or other illnesses

– Not have engaged in risky lifestyle behavior

The Blood Donation Process

The blood donation process is simple and safe. It involves:

– Registration and screening

– Pre-donation information and health check

– The actual donation

– Rest and refreshment

– Post-donation care

By donating blood, individuals can make a significant difference in the lives of patients and their families.

As we celebrate National Blood Donor Day 2025, let us recognize the importance of voluntary blood donation and encourage more people to become regular donors by visiting NBSG authorized and FDA-accredited blood collection centres in all regional hospitals in the country.

Together, we can save lives and make a difference in our communities.
