Dr Steve Paintsil, a medical officer with the Clinical Services Department of the Southern Zonal Blood Centre (SZBC) has been awarded the prestigious Harold Gunson Fellowship for 2024.
The Harold Gunson Fellowship, an award conferred by the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT), is a symbol of excellence and International recognition in the field of transfusion medicine. This distinguished award plays a pivotal role in spotlighting and nurturing emerging talents within the global transfusion community, especially those from developing countries.
In 2024, the ISBT announced Dr. Steve Paintsil as one of its esteemed recipients. This acknowledgment signifies his dedication, hard work, and contributions to the field. The award highlights his commitment to advancing knowledge and making significant discoveries that can potentially impact patient care and outcomes. It also serves as motivation for other aspiring professionals in the field, inspiring them to pursue excellence in their research endeavors.
Such recognition not only honors the recipient but also sheds light on the importance of research in transfusion medicine. It showcases the value of innovative thinking, persistence, and a passion for improving healthcare practices which are the hallmark of the National Blood Service. The Research, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation department does innovative research to improve blood services across Ghana and contribute to the body of knowledge.
As a recipient, Steve received an invitation to attend the ISBT Congress in Barcelona, where he had the unique opportunity to present his research to an international audience, engaging with some of the most distinguished figures in transfusion medicine. The fellowship provided him with support, including free registration for the congress, travel grant and accommodation, and access to a suite of educational sessions and workshops that further enriched his professional development.
Steve delivered a poster presentation on the topic: “Evaluation of the impact of a donor management system on donor deferrals for low haemoglobin at the Southern Zonal Blood Centre, Ghana” at the just ended ISBT Congress held in Barcelona. The National Blood Service celebrates Dr. Paintsil for this honor and congratulates all departments and individuals in the organization involved in this great success.
