Dr. Nathan Mulure, the Head of Patient Asset Thermos, visited the Greater Accra Regional Blood Center (GARBC) to gain a comprehensive understanding of their operational processes and clinical practices, with particular emphasis on the utilization of advanced laboratory equipment made by the Thermos Scientific Equipment Company, a manufacturer of laboratory equipment.
Upon his arrival at GARBC, Dr. Mulure was warmly welcomed by Dr. Dylis John Teye, the Head of the GARBC, alongside Agyemang Antwi-Boateng, the Head of the Blood Grouping Unit within the laboratory. The meeting provided an excellent opportunity for Dr. Mulure to interact with the dedicated laboratory personnel and various other members of the GARBC team, fostering an environment of collaboration and knowledge sharing.
Dr. Mulure, a Kenyan who works with Thermos Scientific Equipment Company, was in Ghana for a two-day World Health Expo Leaders conference- Africa, in Accra. He noted that the entire African continent is facing challenges with blood donation, except for Uganda, which has achieved over 90% of its blood donation target.
He emphasized the need for Africa to brainstorm and develop creative solutions tailored to the continent’s circumstances. He suggested that GARBC could become a regional center for blood training in West Africa and called for consistent blood donation drives that link African countries to the cause. ‘’This would help increase blood donation rates, especially since Ghana has the capacity to be a leader in blood donation initiatives’’, he disclosed.
He suggested that the National Blood Service seek assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). Both agencies provide official development assistance and work on a variety of international development projects.
During his exploration of the facility, Dr. Mulure observed the center’s meticulous adherence to operational protocols and quality assurance measures. He expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the center’s unwavering commitment to meeting the country’s critical demand for safe and high-quality blood. Additionally, he commended the management and staff for their exemplary diligence, dedication, and efforts in maintaining a clean, organized, and efficient facility that serves the community’s healthcare needs.
Dr. Dylis John Teye, Head of the GARBC, expressed gratitude for the visit and gave the assurance that the suggestions would be implemented.
