NBS Takes a Lifesaving Message to the Heart of Elmina Bakatue 2026

August 17, 2026

At the forecourt of the historic Elmina Castle on July 11, 2026, amidst the vibrant drumming of Asafo groups, the royal procession of Chiefs, and the rich display of Edina culture, there was a different but equally powerful message: Give Blood, Save Lives’.

In this year’s Elmina Bakatue Festival, the National Blood Service (NBS) was not just a guest; but a partner, invited to the climax durbar to champion voluntary blood donation before thousands of patrons, traditional leaders, and dignitaries.

The appearance was the first major outing of a bold new strategy to bridge tradition and public health by engaging traditional leaders of major festivals across Ghana. The goal is simple and urgent: to meet people where culture gathers and to turn the massive communal energy of our festivals into a national culture of voluntary blood donation.

Bakatue, the revered festival that marks the opening of the fishing season for the people of Elmina, was chosen as a flagship opportunity.

The highlight was education in the language of the people, led by the Head of Donor Recruitment, of the National Blood Service, Mr. David Dodzi Ahiadzro. The sessions demystified blood donation; why voluntary donation is critical; when transfusions are needed; who qualifies to donate; how safe the process is; and how myths and fears can be put to rest.

While the durbar audience listened, the rest of the team worked the crowd, handing out flyers and holding one-on-one follow-up engagements at the NBS stand. A special appeal was made to all leaders present to carry the message to their communities for future blood drives in collaboration with the Central Regional Blood Centre at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH).

2026 Bakatue proved what is possible when heritage meets health. With one festival successfully marked, the NBS Festivals Collaborative Initiative now looks ahead to the next celebrations on the calendar, one durbar at a time, building a Ghana where no one dies for lack of blood.
